Baffling money matters

"I smoke 20 cigarettes a day and drink 4 pints of lager a night."

On average, a pack of 20 cigarettes costs about £3. So a month's worth of cigarettes sets one back about £90. And a whole year's worth of cigarettes would be £1095.

A pint of cheap lager down here on the south coast of England is usually £2. That would come up to £240 a month, £2920 a year.

£4015 a year is a heck of alot of money to spend on vices.

I can't understand how some of my patients complain about being poor and broke, but they can still afford 60 Lucky Strikes a day and 8 Stellas a night.

What baffles me is how they find the time to smoke 60 cigarettes in one day.

Ah, the power of addiction. It overwhelms rational thought. A form of chemical psychosis, IMHO !

You know, I've never seen anyone smoke AND blog (or for that matter use a computer) at the same time, so you might just be right, 40cal. :)

Hmmm...never seen anyone smoke AND blog/use a computer at the same time? Should I send you a webcam still, angry doc?

60 a day is like 5 an hour or something, isn't it? And considering that most patients tend to give rather low estimates.

So if you smoke and blog, does that mean that you're a powerful one-handed typist?

My father had a professor who used but one match a day (back in the days before they had lighters and air-conitioned lecture halls) - he would use the last bit of one cigarette to light his next...

Chain smoking. Say if each ciggy burns in five minutes ... hey, that makes 12 in an hour! If one is really stressed, one can just stare into space and smoke like that!

You know, I never try and talk old people out of smoking anymore.

I reckon if they've smoked as much as they have and still made it to four score and seven years of age, then they shouldn't be deprived of whatever enjoyment they derive from their vices. Stopping smoking at that age isn't gonna make any difference anyway.

On the other hand, I've met very few smokers who have made it to the age of 50 without developing some form of chronic lung problem.

Well, at least then you won't kill a patient when you start him on nicotine gum to quit smoking, only to have him choke to death when he accidentally swallows the gum...
