Which would be a greater regret?
1. Putting my career aside and giving up financial independance
2. Putting Stardust aside and giving up being his main caregiver
Which is a greater worry?
1. Financial burden
2. Family dysfunction

Why not do both? :)
Work part-time!
There are quite a few positions you can go for in primary care and health screening that offer flexible hours; some of my friends are "professional locums" who work pretty much as and when they want to, and spend the rest of the time shopping and having high tea...
The going rate for locums is actually quite respectable, and the freedom is priceless. Or you may want to work on a part-time contract, maybe 20 or so hours a week, with better employment benefits.
Of course all this will depend on your registration status, and you will have to make sure you chalk up your CME points.
Just keep in mind that it doesn't have to be one or the other!
If you are interested let me know and I can put you in touch with some people I know (both in the public and the private sectors), or if you crave the glamour you can ask spacefan for a job...
I know this doesn't help but...
...only you can answer these questions. I struggled with the same thing, & am glad I made the choices I did when I did.
angry doc: If I could work part-time, I surely would.
aliendoc: Thanks. I hope I can get to the stage you're at.
