oh, brazilian soaps! i remember those...and how no one thought it odd seeing these caucasian folks speak mandarin. there's one i absolutely dislike, but every TV would be tuned to it - some slave girl story. a brazilian oshin, but with the white-male-oppression thing thrown in and minus the cuteness of Oshin's lead actress.

Watching Oshin did nothing for my self-esteem as a woman I must admit, even though I watched it when I was only a teenager in the 80's. There is no way I can measure up to the longsuffering, patient, altruistic, obedient, daughter/wife/mother that Oshin is.
